Ayrshire Cattle

Bos taurus

Originating in Ayrshire, Scotland, this medium-to-large dairy breed is recognized by its reddish-brown-and-white (occasionally mahogany) patched coat and was introduced to Kenya during the colonial dairy-development era as a rugged alternative to the Holstein-Friesian.

Climate requirements
One of the most versatile exotic dairy breeds for Kenya, performing well from the cool highlands down into semi-arid mid-altitude zones, and generally hardier and less disease-prone (notably to mastitis and milk fever) than Friesians in less-controlled environments.

Husbandry

Care & Economics

Husbandry guide
Commonly kept under zero-grazing or semi-zero-grazing with napier grass, silage, and dairy meal, though its ability to convert lower-quality forage into milk makes it more forgiving for smallholders than Friesians. Average live weight is about 450 kg, with milk yield potential of up to 30 litres/day and a typical Kenyan average around 3,000 litres per 305-day lactation at roughly 4.7% butterfat. Standard vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease, East Coast fever, lumpy skin disease, and brucellosis is recommended, along with routine deworming and tick control. Its strong legs and udder attachment suit hillier smallholder plots in the highlands.
Economic importance
Ayrshires give smallholder farmers a resilient, lower-input dairy option that still delivers commercially viable milk volumes, particularly valuable in medium-to-lower-potential zones where pure Friesians underperform or incur higher veterinary costs.
